Low Back Pain

Do You Feel Like You Have a Knife in Your Back?

Up to 90% of Americans experience low back pain at some point in their life, making it one of the most common health problems plaguing our society. low back pain is the second leading cause of lost work days, second only to the common cold. Over $50 Billion is spent diagnosing and treating low back pain annually in the U.S. The the use of diagnostics such as MRI and expensive procedures such as low back surgeries have skyrocketed in recent years.

The truth is that low back pain is a symptom, not a condition by itself. Many conditions can cause low back pain, so it is important to have a thorough workup done by a knowledgeable Doctor of Chiropractic. I recommend this be done by a Chiropractor for a couple of reasons. First, I feel Chiropractors see more musculoskeletal problems than primary care MDs who are inundated with more patients having a broad array of conditions. Also, Chiropractors tend to evaluate the spine with X-rays more commonly than MDs. If MDs do take X-rays, they are usually ruling out severe (and extremely rare) conditions, such as tumors, infections of the spine or discs, fractures, dislocations, etc. Most Medical Guidelines do not recommend taking routine X-rays for Low Back Pain because rarely are these severe Red Flag pathological conditions ever present. However, Guidelines specifically for Chiropractors [1] and for others who use manual therapy on the spine [2] do make the recommendation that X-rays can be used routinely for low back pain patients.

The highest level of research study design is the Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT). Over 70 RCTs on Chiropractic and spinal adjusting have shown positive benefit on patients with low back pain. This makes treatment provided by Chiropractors the most researched non-surgical alternative for low back pain sufferers.
